Deciding to close a playgroup

Some playgroups run for decades while others run for just a year or two.

Playgroups can close for a wide range of reasons. For example, you may have a large number of children move into kinder all at once or playgroup families may move away or have their circumstances change.

If you’re starting to think that it may be time to close your playgroup, make sure you talk to as many playgroup families as possible to see if they agree.

You may find that this prompts families to take action to attract more families to the playgroup to see if they can keep it running.

If your playgroup families agree that it is time to shut your playgroup down, make sure you contact Playgroup Tasmania at admin@playgrouptas.org.au to talk the reasons through.  There may be options to help the playgroup to keep running, for example extra promotion or changing days or venue.

Once a decision to close a playgroup is made, Playgroup Tasmania  can support you to take the necessary steps and make sure any documents, toys, books or other assets are managed properly. After closure, any money held by the playgroup needs to be passed to Playgroup Tasmania.
